Look! What's On Tap? La Nevera, Gran Vino Tinto 2018

It’s been a while, Nooksters! Great to see your lovely face back on our blog for another tasting and review. It’s been a chaotic few months, so I hope you’re doing well!

Today we will be reviewing the La Nevera, Gran Vino Tinto 2018. This is a 3L, Bag-in-Box wine from Spain.

I always get so excited around the holiday times, though it definitely will be different this year. Who else is having an untraditional Thanksgiving next week? No matter how you’re celebrating this season, we hope you are doing so safely and responsibly.

So, while the participants may change, there are two constants at the Thanksgiving table in our house: food and wine. While I can’t help you as much in the food department, I can definitely give you some tips on wine options! Maybe this one will be the wine for you.

Tasting Notes

The La Nevera, Gran Vino Tinto 2018 is a red blend made with the Tempranillo, Garnacha, Graciano and Viura grapes. Our tasters are familiar with Tempranillo and Garnacha grapes, but we weren’t as familiar with Graciano and Viura.

Both Graciano and Viura grapes are grown mostly in Spain, where they are very popular in blends. The Graciano is a dark grape known for its deep color and strong fragrance. The Viura is a white grape with mild acidity. While these grapes don’t stand up so well for winemaking alone, together they make an interesting sip!

First off, this wine is a gorgeous color. It is candy apple red in the glass — super bright and enticing. The taste is just as captivating. It starts off warm and slightly spicy, and there is an interesting flavor underneath. It seemed almost gravelly or earthy. It’s subtle, but it’s there. This added a nice smoothness that was very enjoyable. Overall, this wine is quite berry-forward and delicious.

I know I said I couldn’t help with food, but wine pairings? That’s what I’m here for. Now, I will also say, I believe the best pairing you can make is with whatever you think tastes good with your wine. I don’t believe in strict rules for enjoyment. I can, however, make some suggestions!

If we’re still talking Thanksgiving dinner, La Nevera, Gran Vino Tinto 2018 is going to be great with your baked chicken or turkey. This wine is not overpowering, so it’ll also work well with the myriad of dishes on your table. As for everyday pairings? Pizza is always a win with an effortless wine like this.
